Another MN USA State Championship weekend has come and gone! It was a great weekend of competition, team building, and establishing relationships within the New Prague Wrestling Community! With so many different ways to measure success within our program its obvious we have a lot to celebrate at every level of the program.
Here's what Varsity Head Coach Wagner had to say about this weekend and the future of New Prague Wrestling: "I cannot express how proud I am of all those who went out and gave it their all. Some walked away without a win, some walked away one match from placing, one walked away on top of the podium, and many walked away somewhere in between. However, one thing is for sure, we are PROUD of each and everyone that went out and gave it their all against the best wrestlers in the state of MN"
Statistically we cannot measure the team building and the relationships that were established over this weekend or the entire season. The sense of community and camaraderie within the New Prague Wrestling family is everywhere!!!

The Trojans were a combined 38-12 at one of the toughest sections in the state!
A great season none the less and this one will go down as one of, if not the best team in New Prague's rich history of wrestling.
Go Trojan Wrestling!!!!
The Trojan wrestling team came up short in their quest to reach the State Tournament. New Prague was the #2 seed and would face #7 Apple Valley in the quarterfinals. New Prague has never beaten Apple Valley, but that would change in a big way. New Prague would win 12 of 14 matches and rout the former power house 62-9.
In the Semifinals, the Trojans would face Prior Lake, a team they beat handily in the HWY 13 Rumble. New Prague would again roll the Lakers 50-12.
In the finals we would face the defending State Champions and #1 ranked Shakopee. We would need a lot of things to go right for us to win this one. Shakopee has 7 wrestlers ranked 1 or 2. We would need to limit the bonus points and get an upset or two. Shakpoee was just too tough for the Trojans, winning 10 of the 14 matches. Final score 49-13.
The Trojans team season comes to an end with an impressive 28-2 record. A job well done! Individual sections start this Friday at 4PM in Apple Valley. We hope to see many individuals make the State Tournament this year.

The #4AAA Trojans came into the final regular season match with a 26-0 record and they would face #2AAA STMA in New Prague.
The gym was packed with New Prague fans and we had close to 250 people watching on Facebook Live.
This match up would feature 8 ranked wrestlers from STMA and 7 from New Prague. We started with a great match at 106 with #2AAA Landon Robideau going up against #4AAA Koy Buesgens. This was a close match with each wrestler earning 1 point for their ecscape. Buesgens was dinged with a stall call early in the match and that would come into play in the overtime sessions. This one would go to triple overtime, but in the second overtime Buesgens would get hit with his 2nd stalling call and would drop this one 2-1 in triple overtime. Both stall calls where questionable but STMA would take the early 3-0 lead.
New Prague would bounce back with 4 straight wins starting with Colby Dunkel winning over #4AAA Parker Janssen 9-5. Colton Bornholdt would pick up a tech fall at 120. Joey Novak gets the decision win 8-1 at 126 but looking at the tape he should have been awarded back points that would have given him a major. That would come into play deciding the match.
Ryan Wagner had a great 9-6 win over Isiah Milsna at 132 bringing the team score to 14-3. 138 would be the 2nd featured match of the night with #2AAA Nick Novak squaring off against #5AAA Cole Becker, this one would go down to the wire but Becker would come away with a 2-1 victory after scoring a reversal in the 2nd period.
Max Scheffler came out at 145 and picked up a Major dec to bring the score to 18-6. This is where we would hit the second meat of their lineup with 4 ranked guys to our 1. Carter Bornholdt would give up a late take down and lose by a major decion 11-3 to #7AAA Jonah Hayes at 152. Ethan Gregory would come out at 160 and get pinned by a tough #3AAA Carl Leuer. Jay Skogerboe battled against #8AAA Hayden LeMonds but would end up losing 20-5 for the tech fall. Owen VIke would come out and face Carson Bittner at 182 and pick up the pin. Senior Jake Trachte was not in the line up because of an injury from last week.
195 would feature two #3AAA ranked wrestlers with WIll Busch and Wyatt Lidberg. This was a battle with Lidberg coming out on top 8-2 but it was a much closer match than the score indicated.
That flurry by STMA would bring the team score to 30-18 STMA. New Prague would need two pins to have a chance. Evan Anderson would come out a 220 and this was close match going into the 3rd tied at 0. Anderson would choose top to start the third and the strategy paid off as he picked up the pin with just under a minute to go.
Matt Giesen will come out for his final match in the NP HS gym. Matt would trail 4-2 going into the third. He too would choose the top position and Giesen would lock up a cradle and after almost giving up a defensive pin, Matt would regroup and get the cradle pin. That brings the score 30-30, It would go down to the 9th criteria as we each one 7 matches, 2 pins, 1 tech and 1 major. This would then go to the most points scored first. STMA would win 15-10. STMA would win 31-30 on criteria. If we had our full line up this may have been a better outcome for New Prague. Great match none the less.
New Prague finished the regular season with a 26-1 record and now will compete in the section tournament next Friday in Shakopee.
The Trojans competed in their final individual tournament of the year at the Orono Invitational.
They would win the tournament with 210.0 points followed by #8AA Dassel-Cokato/Litchfield with 180.5, Totino Grace with 123.0 and St. Cloud Tech with 111.0.
New Prague would have 4 Champions.
